    Facing Off

The Rutgers men’s lacrosse team opens the 2013 season at home on the RU Turf Field on Feb. 10 at 11 a.m. RU kicks off the second year of Brian Brecht’s tenure “On the Banks.” The Scarlet Knights compiled a 6-9 record last season, with a 1-5 mark in BIG EAST action. The Jaspers return seven starters from a squad that went 5-9 last season, while Rutgers brings back five starters and 26 overall returners.

    Scouting the Manhattan Jaspers

Manhattan comes into the 2013 season after going 5-9 in the MAAC in 2012 and returns seven starters from that roster. The Jaspers begin their first season under head coach Steve Manitta.

The Scarlet Knights hold a 10-0 record all-time against the Jaspers in a series that dates back to 2001. The two squads last met in 2011 when Rutgers picked up an 11-3 win at home on Feb. 18.

Individually, senior attackman Brian McGrath and classmate midfielder Tyler Jarvis return as the leading point-scorers for the Jaspers. Last season, McGrath led the squad with 29 points and finished tied for first with 18 goals. Jarvis totaled 20 points and matched McGrath’s goal total in 2012.

    Knights in Shining Armor

Leadership will be provided by the four team captains, featuring senior defenseman Edward Bartleson (Morristown, N.J.), junior defenseman Nick Contino (Branchburg, N.J.), sophomore midfielder Brian Goss (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and redshirt junior midfielder Anthony Terranova (Flemington, N.J.).

    Preview the Scarlet Knights

Brecht has five returning starters from a season ago, including 54 percent of the team’s point-scoring.

Two of Rutgers’ top three point-scorers from 2012 are still on the roster, with junior attackman Nick DePaolera (Kinnelon, N.J.), who finished second on the team last year with 37 points (15g, 12a), and classmate attackman Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.), who tallied 34 points on 27 goals and seven assists in 2012.

Goss returns for his second stint with the Scarlet Knights after posting 11 goals and nine assists last season. He was the fifth-leading point-scorer and the only freshman to start all 15 games for Rutgers. Also at midfield, sophomore Joseph Nardella (Cazenovia, N.Y.) returns to the faceoff circle after collecting a team-high 52 groundballs in 2012 and recording a 109-206 (.529 percent) win-loss on faceoff attempts.

Defensively, the Scarlet Knights welcome back their top two performers. Contino caused a team-best 24 turnovers in 2012, followed by classmate Christopher Zybrick (Kinnelon, N.J.), who caused 17.

    Familiar Faces

RU faceoff specialist sophomore Brian Lenskold (Martinsville, N.J.) transferred from Manhattan and is in his first season with the Scarlet Knights. He compiled a .506 faceoff percentage with the Jaspers as a freshman, ranking 39th in the country.
