PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 13, 2013) – The Rutgers men’s lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking 12-11 game to No. 7/8 Syracuse in the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y., Saturday. The Scarlet Knights held a five goal lead heading into the fourth quarter and didn’t trail until the Orange scored the game-winning goal with just 10 seconds remaining in the contest.
Redshirt junior M Anthony Terranova (Flemington, N.J.) had a career day, notching a personal-high four goals while tallying one assist for a career-best five points. His previous high in both categories was two. The midfielder also collected a personal-best seven ground balls, shattering his previous mark of four.
Classmate A Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.) recorded his fifth hat trick of the season and eighth multi-point game of 2013. Freshman A Scott Bieda (Bridgewater, N.J.) matched his career-high with three points (one goal, two assists), also notching his eighth multi-point game of the campaign.
Rutgers dropped to 2-11 (0-5 BIG EAST), while Syracuse improved to 9-2 (3-1 BIG EAST). The game marked the eighth time this season that the Scarlet Knights lost by two goals or less. RU held a 12-8 saves advantage and collected three more ground balls, 37-34, than the Orange.
Sophomore FO Joseph Nardella (Cazenovia, N.Y.) was dominant, winning 18 of 26 faceoffs for a .692 percentage. Freshman GK Kris Alleyne (New City, N.Y.) surrendered just 12 goals against 43 shots including 24 on goal.
Terranova helped RU to a 2-0 lead early, notching both goals. At 9:29 in the first, the midfielder scooped up a ground ball after an Orange turnover and streaked down the field, putting the ball past Syracuse GK Dom Lamolinara for a man-down goal. Syracuse closed the opening quarter with two of its own, tying the game heading into the second stanza.
The Scarlet Knights scored the first three goals of the second period, including a man-up goal from Bieda. The Orange scored before the end of the half, giving Rutgers a 5-3 lead at the break.
RU scored five of the seven goals in the third quarter, starting with a man-up goal from Klimchak on an assist from Bieda at 14:32. After a Syracuse goal at 13:45, Nardella won the faceoff and darted down the field, feeding Klimchak again, who put the ball in the back of the net to give Rutgers a 7-4 lead.
Following a goal from Syracuse’s Luke Cometti, who had six in the game, Klimchak scored on a feed from Terranova, before Terranova would notch one of his own at 8:26. Sophomore A Brian Goss (Arlington Heights, Ill.) would close out the third-quarter scoring run for the Scarlet Knights with a goal at 6:57. RU led 10-5 heading into the final period.
The Orange then went on a 5-0 run to start the fourth quarter, including four from Cometti, to tie the game at 10-10 with 6:20 remaining. Terranova answered, scoring an unassisted goal at 5:40 to give Rutgers an 11-10 lead. Syracuse’s Derek Maltz scored two of his three goals in the final 2:04 of the contest, including one with just 10 seconds on the clock to secure the win for the Orange.
The Scarlet Knights next return home to take on Duke at Yurcak Field on Saturday, April 20 at 7 p.m.
