  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Dec. 9, 2013) – Members of the men’s lacrosse team participated in the Rutgers Big Chill 5k Run/Walk in New Brunswick, N.J., on Sunday, Dec. 8.

“It was a great event for us to show our support and give back to the kids,” said senior A Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.). “We know how much our donations and toys mean to the families that receive them and we are happy to contribute in giving the children a great holiday season.”

The Big Chill 5k is a unique charitable event in which participants are asked to bring a new toy for a child between the ages of 3 and 14. In 2012, over 8,000 people walked or ran and the event collected more than 10,000 toys. Rutgers Recreation, along with the New Brunswick Recreation Department, provides the expertise to conduct the race. Members of the staff are joined each year by 350 volunteers from social and service organizations on and off campus.

“The Big Chill is a very gratifying charity event,” said senior M Anthony Terranova (Flemington, N.J.). “Especially when you register, just to see thousands of gifts ready to be given to those who really need and deserve them. The Big Chill is one of those events that gets the whole Rutgers community involved. It’s rewarding just to be a part of that atmosphere during the holiday season.”

The toys that are collected are wrapped by 200 volunteers the following Monday and sent to the administrative offices of the New Brunswick Housing Authority, the Franklin Housing Authority, The Salvation Army of Bound Brook, NIA Community, Emmaus House, St. Vincent de Paul, Catholic Charities, Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital and American Red Cross of Central New Jersey and several others.
