  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Dec. 13, 2013) – Former Rutgers men’s lacrosse standout Mike Diehl (2009-12) has signed a contract to play professionally for the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League (NLL).

“Mike was a physical presence and talented player for us,” said RU head coach Brian Brecht. “It is great to see him at the next level. His size and skill set will be a great addition to the Philadelphia Wings.”

With the Scarlet Knights, the midfielder was a top contributor, starting 52 games and playing in 59 in four seasons. He finished his career with 59 goals and 17 assists (76 points). Diehl was named the 2009 Al Twitchell award winner, given to the team’s most valuable freshman, after starting 13 of 15 games in his initial season, posting 14 goals and seven assists.

“It feels great to have become a part of the Philadelphia Wings organization and the NLL,” said Diehl. “I am proud to be part of a team and a league that has so many great players. My experience at Rutgers definitely helped prepare me to play at this level. Coach Brecht and his staff did a great job helping me improve as a player, along with the strength and conditioning coaches and the outstanding athletic facilities Rutgers provides its student-athletes.”

Diehl joins fellow Rutgers lacrosse alum Chris O’Dougherty (2006-09) in the NLL. O’Dougherty, a defenseman for the Vancouver Stealth, was a USILA Honorable Mention All-American in 2007 and played in the 2009 North/South Game.

The National Lacrosse League (NLL) is North America's professional indoor lacrosse league featuring the best players in the world competing for the sport's most coveted prize, the Champion's Cup.

The Wings open their season on Dec. 28 at the Buffalo Bandits, while the Stealth first see action at the Colorado Mammoth on Jan. 4.
