  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 31, 2014) – The Rutgers men’s lacrosse team kicks off the 2014 season with exhibition matchups against Hobart and Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y., on Saturday, Feb. 1. Starting at noon, RU will play two game-like quarters against Hobart, before playing four game-like quarters with Hofstra.

Slated to play its first full season at High Point Solutions Stadium, the Scarlet Knights welcome back nine of their 10 starters from a year ago, as well as junior FO/M Joe Nardella (Cazenovia, N.Y.). Head coach Brian Brecht enters his third season “On the Banks,” having coached three All-BIG EAST honorees in his first two seasons.

Senior D Nick Contino (Branchburg, N.J.), junior M Brian Goss (Arlington Heights, Ill.), Nardella, senior DAndrew Parrilla (Wyckoff, N.J.) and senior M Anthony Terranova (Flemington, N.J.) are the team captains for the 2014 season.

The offense returns 98 percent of its point-scoring from a year ago, including its top 13 players in that category. Senior A Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.) led the squad with 32 goals and 39 points last season. He has 86 career goals, five away from tying him for 10th all-time in RU’s record book. Classmate Nick DePaolera (Kinnelon, N.J.) led the team with 14 assists in 2013, while also scoring 17 goals.

Four other Scarlet Knights scored double-figure goals last season: sophomore A Scott Bieda (Bridgewater, N.J.) with 17, Goss with 13, Terranova with 11 and sophomore M Jacob Coretti (E. Grand Rapids, Mich.) with 10.

Defensively, Rutgers returns plenty of talent, starting with sophomore GK Kris Alleyne (New City, N.Y.), who was the 2013 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year. He finished fourth in the nation in saves per game (14.00) and sixth in save percentage (.596) last season. Rutgers also returns Contino and Parrilla, who finished as the team’s top-two players in caused turnovers with 24 and 15, respectively.

Special teams are also a strong point for the Scarlet Knights, as Nardella comes back after earning Second Team All-BIG EAST honors in 2013. Last season, he finished fourth in the country in faceoff win percentage (.622) and ground balls per game (8.40).

Thirty-one players return with playing experience, and the squad welcomes 16 newcomers.

A member of the Northeast Conference (NEC), Hobart put together a 6-8 record (2-5 NEC) and downed eventual national runner-up Syracuse (13-12) on the road on April 16, 2013. The Statesmen are led by first-year head coach Greg Raymond.

Hofstra returns after a 7-7 season (2-4 Colonial Athletic Association) that included an 8-7 win at Notre Dame (March 9, 2013). Seth Tierney is in his eighth season at the helm.

The regular season opens at High Point Solutions Stadium vs. Manhattan on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. Fans can purchase season or single-game tickets by clicking here or calling 1-866-445-GORU (4678).
