PISCATAWAY, N.J. (February 23, 2013) – Junior midfield Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.) posted her third-straight multi-goal game of the season as the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team bested Fairfield, 5-3, on a rainy, cold day at the RU Turf Field.
Freshman Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley, Pa.) also tallied two goals for the Scarlet Knights (2-1). Three different scorers accounted for the Fairfield (1-2) final score.
Senior captain Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) stopped six shots, including four in the second half.
Martinelli started the day with a free position goal at the 25-minute mark. Fairfield’s Addie Reilly answered just over two minutes later to know the score at one. Junior attack Megan Clements (Pennington, N.J.) came from behind the cage to give the Scarlet Knights a 2-1 advantage with 21 minutes to play before the half.
Pushing the momentum Rutgers’ way, Martinelli scored just as the first half ended on a free position shot, allowing the Scarlet Knights to take a 3-1 lead into the break. Barnes added two free position scores – one just after the half and one with less than seven minutes to play – to account for the final RU tally. Fairfield would make a rally late, scoring two goals to end the game, but it would not be enough.
RU heads to West Long Branch, N.J. for a matchup against Monmouth on Saturday, March 2. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
