PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 5, 2013) – Behind five goals from junior A Megan Clements (Pennington, N.J.) and four goals from classmate M Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.), the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team downed Hofstra, 13-6, on the RU Turf Field at the Stadium Complex, Wednesday. The 13 goals were the second highest of the season for RU, which posted 15 in the season-opener against Manhattan (Feb. 10).

Led by 11th-year head coach Laura Brand-Sias, the Scarlet Knights improved to 6-1, while the Pride dropped to 4-3. Rutgers won 14 of the 21 draw controls in the game and had a strong performance offensively, tallying 29 shots to Hofstra’s 20.

Clements and Martinelli, the team leaders in points this season, each added an assist to their stellar offensive performances, while redshirt junior M Amanda Trendell (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) notched three goals and one helper. Redshirt sophomore Hollie DiMuro (West Babylon, N.Y.) caused four turnovers defensively.

Four Scarlet Knights posted goals and three tallied three or more points.

The Pride got on the board first at the 27:40 mark in the first half. RU answered 35 seconds later when Clements found the back of the net to start a 3-0 RU run, followed by goals from Martinelli and Trendell. Clements and Trendell each posted a hat trick in the first half, while Martinelli scored two in the first 30 minutes.

The Scarlet Knights started the second half on another 3-0 run, starting with senior A Annie McGinley (Moorestown, N.J.), who recorded her only goal of the game with 19:17 remaining. Martinelli then scored back-to-back goals, before Clements put in two of her own to close out the game for Rutgers.

RU is in action at home on Tuesday, March 19, taking on Princeton at the RU Stadium Complex at 3 p.m.
