Annie McGinley scored her first hat trick of the season.

South Bend, Ind. (March 22, 2013) –Rutgers women’s lacrosse’s upset bid of No. 7 Notre Dame fell just short Friday night, as the Scarlet Knights dropped a 9-6 decision at Arlotta Stadium. RU (7-2) was paced by redshirt senior midfielder Annie McGinley (Moorestown, N.J.) with her first hat trick of the season.

Six Scarlet Knights totaled at least a point, while Notre Dame (7-0) was led by Jenny Granger with four points off two goals and two assists.

Senior goalie Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) made 10 saves in the effort.

Notre Dame jumped out to an early lead, scoring three goals over the first 12 minutes – including two by Granger.

McGinley corralled a dish from midfielder Amanda Trendell (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) at the 6:49 mark to pull the Scarlet Knights within two, 3-1, heading into the break. Kalata made eight saves over the first 30 minutes.

After a UND score opened the second stanza, McGinley answered just 41 seconds later to bring the tally to 4-2 in the Irish favor.

Rutgers would come within two again, 5-3, after Megan Clements (Pennington, N.J.) connected off a pass from Jenny Vlahos (Manhasset, N.Y.). Notre Dame pushed the lead to four, 7-3, off two goals from Jaimie Morrison and Lauren Sullivan.

The Scarlet Knights continued to fight, as freshman attack Kim Kolodny (Farmingdale, N.Y.) posted a score with just over 14 minutes to play, but UND tallied back-to-back goals to push the score to 9-4.

Junior midfielder Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.) scored off a free position shot and McGinley connected with 3:58 to play to come within three, 9-6, but the Scarlet Knights would get no closer.

Rutgers continues its road swing at Marquette on Sunday. Game time is set for 1 p.m. ET at Valley Fields.
