Rutgers Women’s Lacrosse Opens Conference Home Slate vs. UConn, Syracuse

  • Piscataway, N.J. (April 4, 2013) – Rutgers women’s lacrosse begins a five-game home slate this weekend, hosting BIG EAST foes Connecticut and Syracuse. Both games have been moved to the RU Turf Field at the Stadium Complex.

    The Scarlet Knights and the Huskies will face off Friday, April 5 at 3 p.m., while RU and SU take the field on Sunday, April 7 at 1 p.m.

    RU (8-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) was last in action at Marquette on Sunday, March 24, earning a 9-4 victory. Eight Scarlet Knights registered a point in the contest, led by redshirt senior midfielder Annie McGinley (Moorestown, N.J.) with three points on two goals and an assist.

    Junior midfielder Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.) added two goals, making it her eighth multi-goal game of the season. The junior ranks first in the BIG EAST in free position goals (0.90/game) and sixth in goals per game (2.50).

    The RU defense currently ranks second in the NCAA in scoring defense (6.2 goals per game). Senior goalie Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) ranks third in the BIG EAST in saves per game (6.78), fifth in save percentage (.504) and seventh in GAA (6.67).

    UConn (7-1, 0-1 BIG EAST) suffered its only loss of the season against Syracuse on March 22. Junior midfielder Lauren Kahn leads the Huskies with 18 goals and 17 assists. In the cage will be freshman Shannon Nee, who owns a 9.89 GAA with 35 saves. Head coach Katie Woods is in her third season with UConn, after spending the previous four years at American University.

    Syracuse (5-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) is coming off a loss against No. 4 Northwestern and will face Villanova on Friday. Junior attack Alyssa Murray leads the Orange with 24 goals and 12 assists. In the net will be Kelsey Richardson, who maintains a 9.14 GAA with 26 saves. As the second head coach in program history, Gary Gait led the Orange to a school-record 19 wins and an appearance in the national championship game last season. Gait is in his sixth season with the team.
