  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 13, 2013) – Rutgers women’s lacrosse head coach Laura Brand-Sias has announced the addition of Katie Hertsch to her coaching staff. A member of the United States National Team for three years now, Hertsch most recently served as an assistant coach at Hofstra after spending a season at Boston University.

Katie Hertsch“I am very excited to bring Katie on staff this year,” said Brand-Sias. “She comes very highly recommended and her enthusiasm and excitement about the opportunities here at Rutgers are undeniable. With our transition into the Big Ten conference, I know Katie’s collegiate experience and her current experience with the U.S. Team will provide great mentorship for our players. I am looking forward to her immediate impact both on and off the field.”

A 2010 graduate of Hofstra and defensive standout for the Pride, Hertsch returned to her alma mater for the 2012-13 academic year, where she was worked as the defensive coach. Hertsch’s influence was noted, as the team finished in the top of the Colonial Athletic Association in several defensive categories and advanced to the league’s championship game.

Prior to returning to Hempstead, N.Y., Hertsch spent a year in Boston as an assistant to the Terrier’s women’s lacrosse program. During her one year at BU, the Terriers finished 11-6 and captured the regular season America East title.

"I want to thank Laura Brand-Sias and the Rutgers University athletic department for the opportunity to join the Rutgers women’s lacrosse staff,” remarked Hertsch. “ I’m elated and grateful to be a part of such a highly competitive and reputable lacrosse program with a high standard for academic success. The combined knowledge, enthusiasm, and passion that Laura and Maggie possess makes me really excited to join their staff and the RU lacrosse family. I'm really looking forward to being a part of the transition into the Big Ten conference while getting the chance to work with Rutgers' talented and driven student athletes."

A member of the US National Team since 2010, Hertsch recently helped lead the country to a gold medal in the FIL World Cup in Oshawa, Canada, that took place this past July. In addition to playing for Team USA, Hertsch also serves as a clinic instructor as a representative of the squad.

Hertsch is heralded as one of the top defenders to ever suit up for the Pride. In three years on Long Island, the former captain amassed 138 ground balls, 70 caused turnovers and 110 draw controls. Those totals rank in the top-10 all-time of each respective category. A two-time All-Mid-Atlantic Region team selection, Hertsch also garnered All-Colonial Athletic Association accolades as a junior and senior and was twice named to the IWLCA Academic Squad.

Hertsch graduated cum laude from Hofstra in 2011 with a bachelor of science in physical education.

What They Are Saying About Katie Hertsch…

“I think Katie is a great young coach who brings a strong work ethic and great energy to the table. Working with her on the US National Team and seeing her coach from our sidelines at BU made me a believer that she has a bright future in coaching ahead of her. I think joining the Rutgers staff and working with Coach Brand will be a fantastic move for Katie’s development as a collegiate lacrosse coach.”
