The IWLCA recognized 407 student-athletes at 152 institutions (Divisions I, II, III) for their excellence in the classroom during the 2008-09 academic year. All student-athletes were nominated by their institutions and held at least junior standing academically. Nominees considered had a GPA of at least 3.5 or were in the top 10 percent of their squad.
The NCAHS recognizes students who receive a varsity letter in their sport while maintaining a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA by their junior or senior year. The mission of the NCAHS is to bring honor and recognition to deserving student-athletes, their families, teams, athletic departments, and colleges in much the same way as Phi Beta Kappa honors academic achievement. The governing board of the NCAHS represents all levels of competition in the NCAA and NAIA.
