PROVIDENCE, R.I. (July 26, 2012) – The Rutgers football program has earned the 2011-12 BIG EAST Team Excellence Award, it was announced Thursday by the conference office. The Scarlet Knights were one of 24 league teams to earn the recognition in their respective sports.

RU was chosen as the BIG EAST’s football winner based on the 2011-12 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on the RU roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.

“We continue to have great pride in our football program for their constant focus on the balance between academics and athletics at Rutgers,” said Tim Pernetti, Director of Athletics. “The Big East Team Excellence Award is true recognition of the tremendous work and commitment of our football staff, academic support staff and student-athletes who compete in the classroom the way they compete on the field.”

Success in the classroom and on the field has become commonplace for Rutgers’ football program. RU’s gridiron team was the lone state university to be ranked in the top 10 percent nationally in the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate scores (APR) for the fifth straight year. In addition, Rutgers was the only institution to win four bowl games while earning the APR honor in the top 10 percent over the previous five-year span.
