| BRIDGEWATER, NJ – Freshman Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) hit a two-run single to cap a five-run fifth inning, as the Scarlet Knights took a 5-4 lead, en route to an 8-7 victory over West Virginia. The victory allows RU to advance in the 2003 BIG EAST Baseball Championship at Commerce Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ. Senior Sean Atchison (Florham Park, NJ) provided 4.2 innings of solid relief work to earn the win for the Scarlet Knights (35-19). The win also marks the 800th victory in the illustrious career of head coach Fred Hill. | |

| PISCATAWAY, NJ - Rutgers fencing standout Alexis Jemal
(Westfield, NJ) and swimming leader Erin McIntyre (Broomfield, CO) were honored
on the 2003
Verizon Academic All-District II University Division Women’s At-Large First-Team,
as announced on May 22 by the College Sports Information Directors of America
(CoSIDA). The two student-athletes will be placed on the ballot for the Verizon/CoSIDA
Academic All-America Women’s At-Large Team, which will be announced Thursday,
June 12.
Jemal finished the fencing season as the 2003 NCAA saber champion, posting a 33-2 record. She was ranked fifth in the nation and won saber titles at the Penn State Open on Nov. 17, the Temple Open on Jan. 26 and the NCAA Regionals on March 9. In 2002, Jemal finished 10th at the NCAAs and in 2001 she finished fifth nationally and was the team’s MVP. |
