March-08-03 Top-Ranked GA Tech Slips Past Rutgers, 6-5, in 10 Innings
ATLANTA, GA – Steven Blackwood led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a pinch-hit solo home run to snap a 5-5 tie and give top-ranked Georgia Tech a 6-5 win over Rutgers this afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium. RU built a 5-1 lead in the sixth, but the Yellow Jackets scored one run in each of the final five innings to rally for the victory and improve to 13-0. RU falls to 1-6.

March-08-03 RU Gymnasts Place Second in Final Home Meet
PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s gymnastics team (14-11) broke the team’s beam record for the third time this season as the Scarlet Knights finished second in their final home meet of the season. Rutgers’ score of 193.700 was second to Michigan State’s 195.450, while Yale and Brown rounded out the meet with a 191.900 and 191.500, respectively

March-08-03 Rutgers Defeats Winthrop 3-1 at FSU Invitational
TALLAHASEE, FL - After falling to No. 14 Florida State University, 6-0, in the first game of the Florida State Tournament, the Rutgers softball team (5-5, 0-0 BIG EAST) bounced back today to defeat Winthrop, 3-1. The game against the Eagles, originally slotted as the first game of the tournament for the Scarlet Knights, was rescheduled due to rain delays.

BOSTON, MA - The women’s track team completed its first day of competition at the ECAC Championships in Boston, MA. Members of the team excelled in five events, earning times that qualify them to compete in tomorrow’s finals

March-08-03 Rutgers Wrestling Takes Sixth at EIWA Championships
ITHACA, NY - Led by a second-place finish from Andy Roy (Wall, NJ), and supported by top four finishes from three others, the Rutgers wrestling team placed sixth at the 2003 EIWA Wrestling Championships, hosted by Cornell University. More importantly, RU will send four student-athletes – Greg Austin (Seaville, NJ), Amir Khan (Voorhees, NJ), Roy and Ryan McGrath (Blairstown, NJ) – to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Kansas City, MO. RU has not sent four grapplers to Nationals since the 1964 season – a span of 39 years.

March-07-03 No. 1 Georgia Tech Knocks Off Rutgers, 11-6
ATLANTA, GA – Ranked first in the latest Baseball America Top 25 poll, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets validated its lofty status with a seven-run first inning en route to an 11-6 win over Rutgers today at Russ Chandler Stadium. The Scarlet Knights out-hit the Yellow Jackets, 16-13, but stranded 15 runners as well. GA Tech starter Kyle Bakker, who entered the game with a 3-0 record, had given up just 11 hits in his previous 18 innings, but yielded 12 in just 5.0 today. With the loss, RU falls to 1-5, while Tech improves to 12-0.

March-07-03 Wrestling Quintet Alive in Winners’ Bracket
ITHACA, NY – Five members of the Rutgers wrestling team remain alive in the championship bracket heading into semifinal action at the 2003 EIWA Championships. The 2003 EIWA Championships, hosted by Cornell University, ended day one action this evening with half of the Scarlet Knights’ contingency poised for a run at an individual championship. With 36.50 points, RU is sitting in fourth place after one day of competition - on track for one of its best-ever finishes.

March-07-03 Pondexter Named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – Rutgers’ Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) has been named the BIG EAST Conference Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year, the conference announced March 7 at its annual pre-tournament awards banquet.

March-07-03 Rutgers Falls to #14 Florida State 6-0
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The Rutgers softball team (4-4, 0-0 BIG EAST) fell to No. 14 Florida State, 6-0 in its first game of the Florida State Invitational. The Scarlet Knights, scheduled to play a noon game as well as a game at 4 p.m., did not play Florida State until 7:30 p.m. after waiting due to a weather delay.
