PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 24, 2011) – The Rutgers University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has partnered with Hodges Digital Strategies to create the first official Rutgers Scarlet Knights application (app) for iPhone and iPad. Both the iPhone app and the iPad app, which will soon be available for purchase via the App store for Apple and on iTunes for $2.99, will feature live RVision video and audio of Rutgers sporting events and news conferences, while also providing photos, news stories, schedules, Twitter and Facebook feeds and team information. Both apps will be listed separately in the App store and have different customized designs for each format.
“Thanks to the hard work of Associate Athletic Director Jason Baum and Web Developer Colin Osborne, and the leadership of Jon Newman and our friends at Hodges Digital Strategies, we are delivering a must-get for any Rutgers fan,” said Rutgers Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tim Pernetti. “From the live RVision programming available to the social media Upstream, we feel this app is truly one of a kind when it comes to following Rutgers Athletics.”
The app will translate the wealth of information from the official Rutgers Athletics web page, www.ScarletKnights.com, into a mobile and more user friendly format. Fans will be able to follow the Scarlet Knights in an immediate fashion from virtually anywhere. In addition to live video, consumers will also have access to post-game interviews, coach’s shows and team highlights which will be archived daily. For fans attending events, directions supported by GPS technology will now be at your fingertips.
An exciting and innovative feature of the app is its Apple Air Play feature. This technology will allow Rutgers fans with Apple TV to watch RVision on their home televisions.
The application was created and donated by Rutgers University graduate and football season ticket holder Jon Newman, a founding partner in Hodges Digital Strategies. The company provides social media consulting and builds apps for social media platforms and mobile applications for handheld devices. Also the CEO of The Hodges Partnership, a full-service public relations firm in Richmond, Va., Newman is a former undergraduate Sports Director at WRSU, Rutgers’ student radio station.
“I’ve been a Rutgers fan for more than 40 years and remember having to point my transistor radio in the right direction to pull in the radio signal for football and basketball games as a kid,” said Newman. “We’ve come a long way from straining to listen to games through the static to watching games on a mobile tablet that you can carry around with you.
“Shortly after we started Hodges Digital Strategies, I approached Tim about donating the iPhone and iPad apps. The goal was not only for fans to access all the great content on ScarletKnights.com, but to enable the live streaming of all RVision games and events on their phone and tablets. The release of the Rutgers Athletics iPhone and iPad apps accomplishes that and gives Rutgers fans mobile access to all Rutgers sports.”
