Statement of C. Vivian StringerRutgers Women's Basketball Coach

Meeting with Mr. Imus is an attempt to try to put a face to the comments made. The Rutgers women's basketball team wants to put this behind us, so our student-athletes can continue to focus on doing well in school.

The outpouring of support and overwhelming response has come because his comments have touched so many. The people have said, 'Enough is enough. We can't take it anymore. We're going to stand up.'

The young people on our team reflect what all of our ideals in our society should be about. Whether or not we, as a team, accept an apology has nothing to do with how the people and his sponsors will react.  It's not that the team is going to say, 'We forgive you, it's okay' and the whole thing will go away and his sponsors will come back. We never believed we had the power to do that in the first place. We only stated a response to what he said.

Everyone needs to have a review of our collective moral fiber, and decide what kind of people we're going to be.
