PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Seven sports at Rutgers University are ranked in the top 20 percentile nationally in the latest APR figures released by the NCAA, headlined by football, women's tennis and men's cross country, which are ranked in the top 10 percentile within their sport. According to the report, Rutgers recorded an average APR score of 972 for its 24 sports.
"I've always believed that at a great university there's no reason that academics and athletics can't co-exist and be mutually beneficial," stated Rutgers Director of Athletics Robert E. Mulcahy III. "This most recent APR report demonstrates our division's commitment to academics, and is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes, our coaches and our academic support staff. We will continue to strive to achieve excellence in both the classroom and on the playing fields."
The Rutgers football team ranked third nationally with a multiyear APR of 977 while women's tennis and men's cross country tied for the top spot in their respective sports in APR with a perfect score of 1,000.
Women's cross country's score of 993 ranked in the top 20 percentile nationally while field hockey had an impressive score of 980 over the four-year period. Other teams with scores above 975 include gymnastics (995/top 20 percentile), women's rowing (995), women's swimming (977), volleyball (981) and women's golf (981).
Men's indoor track posted a multiyear APR of 980 while the men's outdoor track team finished with a mark of 977. Both figures place the track teams in the top 20 percentile nationally.
In all, 10 sports ranked above the Division I 70-to-80 percentile, including men's basketball, which posted a 953.
