NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (April 12, 2014) – The Rutgers rowing team’s First Varsity 8 shattered its previous best time of 7:20.9 with a run of 6:39.3 Saturday afternoon on the Raritan River. Despite being edged by URI, which turned in a time of 6:33.7 in the race, the Scarlet Knights made significant gains with three races remaining until the American Athletic Conference Championships.
“The Varsity 8 had a solid race today against Rhode Island,” said head coach Max Borghard. “They did a good job with their base speed, which is what we were working on all week. The Second Varsity 8 has been up-and-down all spring and it wasn't our best piece today. I know they are a resilient group and are eager to perform at a higher level next week looking forward to St. Joseph's and Navy.”
Rutgers’ Varsity 4 was the lone RU boat to win its race and also topped its previous season-best mark with a scorching time of 7:33.9. The Scarlet Knights previous best was 9:22.4 recorded against MIT on Sunday, April 6.
The Second Varsity 8 dropped its race to URI, 6:42.4-7:04.4, while the Third Varsity 8 was edged 7:00.9-7:21.1.
RU returns to the water on Saturday, April 19 in Philadelphia, Pa., against St. Joseph’s and Navy. The teams will compete on the Schuylkill River, with races expected to begin around 10 a.m.
