  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 30, 2014) – The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) has announced the 2014 Division I All-Region award winners, revealing a Central Second Team All-Region spot for Rutgers rowing’s Veronica DeSalvo (Plymouth, Minn.). The sophomore served as the bow on the First Varsity 8 this season for the Scarlet Knights, who wrapped up the season fifth at the American Athletic Conference Championships on May 18 in West Windsor, New Jersey.

Four other RU rowers – sophomores Bailey Irelan (Delaware, Ohio), Caitlin Lavery (Lawrenceville, N.J.) and Christina McGinnis (Ringwood, N.J.) and senior Jennelle Scheffler (Basking Ridge, N.J.) – were also honored by the CRCA as 2014 Scholar Athletes.

“All five are hard-working student-athletes and it’s great for them to be recognized for their hard work,” said head coach Max Borghard.

Rowers nominated for all-region status are evaluated on the strength of their team's regional finish, coaches’ recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams' varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season. These athletes will be eligible for All-America awards selection following the NCAA Rowing Championships.

To be named a scholar athlete, rowers must attain a minimum 3.5 GPA through the fall semester/ quarter for the current competition year and meet the following requirements:

    • The student-athlete has met all eligibility rules as defined by her institution
    • The student-athlete was in her second, third, or fourth year of eligibility
    • The student-athlete rowed in her institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75 percent of the current spring races or racing in a regional conference event.
    • The head coach of the student-athletes institution was a member in good standing of the CRCA as of May 1, 2014.
