PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 10, 2012) – Rutgers freshman midfielder Mael Corboz (Green Brook, N.J.) was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday, following a stellar individual performance in RU’s 2-0 win over Princeton on Saturday.
Corboz, who is one of four freshmen to start each of the Scarlet Knights’ four games this season, tallied his first career points against the Tigers. In the seventh minute, Corboz scored his first collegiate goal on a pass from fellow freshman Ross Tetro (Colts Neck, N.J.) to put Rutgers ahead. Although it would eventually stand as the game-winner, Corboz added an insurance goal for the Scarlet Knights, finding the back of the net again in the 51st minute off a free kick that sailed around the wall and past the Princeton goalkeeper.
The weekly honor marked the third for Rutgers and second Rookie of the Week accolade. Freshman defender Mitchell Taintor (Storrs, Conn.) received the honor following RU’s 1-0 win over Fordham. Taintor also scored his first collegiate goal and helped the Scarlet Knights defense pitch a shutout.
Rutgers will play its first home game in 17 days, when it hosts the College of Charleston on Friday, Sept. 14 at 5:30 p.m. The contest will serve as the opening game of a soccer doubleheader as the women’s squad takes on Villanova in the nightcap.
