Scarlet Knights look to push over .500 in BIG EAST play

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 15, 2012) – The Rutgers men’s soccer team (6-5-1, 2-2-1) returns to Yurcak Field on Wednesday, Oct. 17 to face BIG EAST foe No. 12 St. John’s (8-2-4, 2-2-1). Game time is set for 7 p.m.

    Rutgers is coming off a 2-1 win over DePaul on Friday night. The Scarlet Knights two goals came from the Eze brothers. Junior Kene Eze (Sayreville, N.J.) notched a goal just 29 seconds into the match. Freshman Olisa Eze (Sayreville, N.J.) scored his first career goal in the 22nd minute of play.

    On the season, the Scarlet Knights are paced by Kene Eze and freshman midfielder Mael Corboz (Green Brook, N.J.). Eze owns six goals, while Corboz has posted three goals and a team-best six assists.

    Between the pipes will be senior Kevin McMullen (Blackwood, N.J.), who owns a 1.14 GAA with 62 saves and three shutouts.

    Eze ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in game winners with three, while sitting sixth in the league in goals. Corboz ranks second in the conference in assists. 

    RU holds a 6-11-7 all-time record against STJ. The Scarlet Knights got the best of the Red Storm in the teams’ last meeting on October 26, 2011, edging St. John’s, 1-0.

    St. John’s is coming off of a 1-0 loss to Louisville last Saturday. Pacing the Red Storm is senior midfielder Jack Bennett with 12 points on four goals and four assists in 2012. In net for STJ will be Rafael Diaz, who owns a 0.60 GAA with 46 saves and an 8-2-4 record. He has notched seven shutouts on the season.

    Head Coach Dave Masur, a Rutgers alum, is in the midst of his 20th year with St. John’s. Masur, a two-time All-American standout while at Rutgers was inducted into the Rutgers Olympics Sports Hall of Fame. He started his coaching career “On the Banks” as an assistant coach in 1984. Masur won a national championship with St. John’s in 1996.
