CINCINNATI, Ohio - (Oct. 20, 2012) –Rutgers men’s soccer nearly played to a draw at Cincinnati into the final minutes Friday at Gettler Stadium, only finally yielding a Bearcat goal in the 87th minute to fall 1-0. The Scarlet Knights (6-7, 2-4-1 BIG EAST) withstood a 19-9 shot advantage by the Bearcats (6-7-4, 2-3-2 BIG EAST) for the majority of the contest.
Underclassmen took the prime chances for the Scarlet Knights in the setback. Freshman midfielder Mael Corboz (Green Brook, N.J.) took three shot chances for the Scarlet Knights, forcing a save by UC goalkeeper Taylor Hafling at the 15:30 mark. Sophomore midfielder Connor Hurff (Sewell, N.J.) placed a 78th minute shot on goal, but the Bearcat net minder was also equal to that attempt.
Rutgers senior goalkeeper Kevin McMullen (Blackwood, N.J.) made two first half saves while directing RU’s defense for the full 90 minutes against the array of Bearcat shots. The deciding shot and goal snuck over the top of McMullen on an attempt on goal by sophomore Bearcat forward Cole Denormandie with 87:36 on the clock.
The Scarlet Knights return to Yurcak Field for the final regular season match of the season, hosting conference foe Villanova (10-4-2, 2-2-2 BIG EAST) on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
