PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 8, 2012) – Freshman midfielder Mael Corboz (Green Brook, N.J.), junior forward Kene Eze (Sayreville, N.J.) and freshman defender Mitchell Taintor (Storrs, Conn.) each earned ALL-BIG EAST honor,s it was announced Thursday night by the league office.
Corboz picked up a pair of honors, earning both Second Team All-BIG EAST and All-Rookie honors. Eze joined Corboz as a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection, while Taintor along with Corboz were both featured on the BIG EAST All-Rookie team.
In his first season “On The Banks”, Corboz started all 14 contests to-date and was the second leading RU scorer with three goals and a team-leading seven assists. His seven assists in 2012 are the most by a Scarlet Knight in a season since 2001 and also placed him in a tie for 17th all-time in the single season record. Additionally Carboz’s four game-winners on the year puts his name in a tie for seventh all-time in the record books. Corboz ranked fifth in the BIG EAST in assists (7) and fourth in assists per game (0.47). He was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week after notching two goals in the Scarlet Knights’ 2-0 win over Princeton.
Eze leads the Scarlet Knight in scoring with eight goals, including four game-winners, and 17 points. He was was among the BIG EAST leaders in game-winning goals and tied for 10th in the BIG EAST in points (17) and goals (8), while ranking seventh in the league in points per game (1.13) and fifth in goals per game (0.53). Eze was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll and to College Soccer News’ National Team of the Week after scoring game winners in victories over Central Connecticut State and Louisville, giving the Scarlet Knights their first win over UofL since 2008.
Taintor appeared and started in all 14 regular season contests, amassing three goals and helping the Scarlet Knights to shutouts against Fordham, Princeton and College of Charleston. He received BIG EAST Rookie of the Week accolades in RU’s 1-0 win over Fordham.
The Rutgers men’s soccer team finished the 2012 regular season at 7-7-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the BIG EAST. The Scarlet Knights await the NCAA Division I men’s soccer selection show on Monday, Nov. 12 at 5:30 p.m.to see if they will be one of 26 teams receiving an at-large berth to the 48-team tournament.
