CHICAGO, Ill. (Jan. 9, 2013) – Former Rutgers men’s soccer forward/midfielder Samuel Archer (Queens, N.Y.) was named the winner of the Chicago Fire’s fifth annual Open Tryout it was announced on Tuesday.   Archer was selected from a group 150 players and will join the Fire for preseason training camp beginning on Sunday, Jan. 20 in Ave Marie, Fla.

“Winning the open tryout means everything to me,” Archer told ChicagoFire.com. “It’s always been my ultimate goal and dream to play professionally. This is a good step on my journey to becoming a professional player and I’m ready to show what I’ve got.”

“We are very happy for Sam.  He has obviously work very hard and has showed an incredible desire to make it at the highest level and we wish him the very best,” said Rutgers head men’s soccer coach Dan Donigan. “ It is very tough for players just out of college to make it into MLS and every prospect faces different challenges so wish him continued success with the Chicago Fire as he heads into their training camp.”

A product of Queens, N.Y., Archer was also invited to take part in the Colorado Rapids preseason in 2012 as a trialist and spent time with USL Pro sides Harrisburg City Islanders and the Wilmington Hammerheads. A holder of dual American and Jamaican passports, Archer is a product of the New York Red Bulls Academy system and was a member of the U.S. U-17 National Team pool.

During his career at Rutgers, Archer helped the Scarlet Knights to the third round of the NCAA College Cup as a senior and registered six goals, including a pair of game winners, six assists, and 18 points in his four-year career.

“Many skillful players emerged during the two day tryout,” said Chicago Fire Academy Director Larry Sunderland on the team’s website. “Sam’s composure and skill with the ball were evident throughout the process. We’re excited to have Sam join the first team during training camp later this month.”
