  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (July 10, 2013) – Incoming Rutgers soccer freshman defender/midfielder Spencer Hambleton (Scotch Plains, N.J.) was named Second Team All-America by Elite Soccer Report it was announced on Tuesday.

Spencer helped St. Benedict’s to a pair of national championships and four state prep championships during his high school career.  The incoming Scarlet Knight anchored a defense that allowed only six goals in 24 games during his senior campaign.  In addition to being ranked No. 33 on ESPNHS’s Top 150, Hambleton was a two-time First Team All-Prep selection and an ESPN New Jersey All-Star.

“Spencer was the captain of the #1 team in the country and. St. Benedict’s is certainly one of the most legendary high school programs in the country,” said Rutgers men’s soccer head coach Dan Donigan of Hambleton at the time of his signing.  “Spencer brings an attitude of winning along with great leadership qualities.” “

“He can play in several positions, however we are looking for him to fill a void in the backline or midfield. Spencer has the ability to become a great two way player for our program and I have 100% confidence that he will find a spot on our team that will make us better,” added Donigan. “We expect Spencer to play significant minutes as he begins his collegiate career.”

This is the third honor for the Scarlet Knights’ 2013 recruiting class.  The seven members of the incoming freshman class were listed among the top 35 recruiting classes in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer and fellow incoming freshman Erik Sa (Watchung, N.J.) was named one of the top ten midfielders by College Soccer News.

The Rutgers men’s soccer team kicks off the 2013 season with a pair of exhibitions in late August.  The Scarlet Knights travel to Monmouth on Aug. 20 and host Virginia on Aug. 24.  RU kicks off the regular season at the Duke Soccer Classic with the host Blue Devils and Elon before returning home to host Penn State at Yurcak Field on Sept. 6.
