PISCATAWAY, N.J. (July 26, 2013) – Former Scarlet Knight standout and current Sporting Kansas City coach, Peter Vermes, will head the MLS All-Stars at the 2013 ATT&T MLS All-Star Game. The game will be played July 31 at Sporting Park in Kansas City and air on ESPN2 at 9 p.m.
Vermes will coach the league’s squad against AS Roma from Italy’s top division, Serie A.
A former All-Star himself, Vermes played in the 2000 All-Star Game when he was a member of the Kansas City Wizards, a team that would go on to capture the MLS Cup.
Since 2005, the MLS All-Star game has brought in top-level international clubs to oppose the best the MLS has to offer. The MLS is currently 6-2-1 since moving to the new format with both losses coming against Manchester United in 2010 and 2011.
A First Team All-American and the runner-up for National Player of the Year, Vermes put together one of the finest careers in Rutgers sports history competing for the Scarlet Knights from 1985-87. He ranks seventh all-time in points (89), eighth in goals (35), 10th in assists (19) and second in game-winning goals (15). In 1987, he earned First Team All-America honors after scoring 21 goals and 15 assists for 52 points and helped lead Rutgers to the Region Finals of the NCAA Tournament.
Vermes was inducted into the Rutgers Olympic Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 and has been elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
