  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 24, 2013) – The Rutgers men’s soccer team closed the preseason on Saturday night at Yurcak Field in a 0-0 tie with No. 25 Virginia.

The Scarlet Knights were outshot, 16-2, but managed to keep the nationally ranked Cavaliers from finding the back of the net.  Freshman David Greczek (Fairfield, N.J.) got the start, playing 75 minutes with four saves.  Greczek made a point blank range stop against the Cavaliers’ Ryan Zinkhan early in the game. Classmate Mitchell Wailer (Holmdel, N.J.) closed out the game’s final 15 minutes recording one stop.

Rutgers’ best look of the night came in the 83rd minute off a Scarlet Knight corner kick.  Freshman Jack Young (Saddle River, N.J.) took a shot from the right corner of the net, but as Virginia keeper Jeff Gal stretched out to make the save, the ball went just a bit wide, hitting the post and traveling out of bounds,

Sophomore Mitchell Taintor (Storrs, Conn.) had RU’s other shot with a header early in the game.

Virginia was led by Eric Bird with four shots and Jordan Allen with three.

“Virginia is one of the best teams in the country, so to be able play them and get a good gauge of where we are and what we need to improve on I think is great for us right now,” said fourth year head coach Dan Donigan.  “They could’ve maybe gotten a couple goals on us, but for whatever reason, the ball bounced our way tonight. It’s still a great measure though heading into the opening weekend at Duke.”

The regular season gets underway on Friday, Aug. 30 at the Duke Soccer Classic with RU opening against the host Blue Devils followed by a meeting with Elon on Sunday, Sept. 1.  The Scarlet Knights host Penn State for an early taste of Big Ten action in their home opener on Fri. Sept. 6.

Season tickets for RU men’s soccer are on sale and are $50 for adults, $40 for children 12 & under and seniors 55 & older. All packages include a free t-shirt.  Season tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 732-907-1570.
