PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 28, 2013) – Freshman midfielder Erik Sa (Watchung, N.J.) was recognized by College Soccer News as one of the Top Ten Freshman to Watch in 2013.

Sa, who was ranked 23rd in the publication’s recruiting rankings, was the team captain of the New York Redbulls U-18 academy team, which culminated in the national championship.  This past season, he appeared in 27 contests with 24 starts and five goals as the squad went 24-1-7.

The incoming Scarlet Knight was also a member of the US U-15 National Team, PDA U-16 Academy Team and US Developmental Academy Select Team in the winter of 2009 and spring of 2010.  At Seton Hall Prep in 2011, where he collected nine goals and 14 assists and helped his team to the semifinals of the 2011 NJSIAA Tournament, Sa was named Third Team All-State and First Team All-Essex County.

This is the second preseason honor for SA.  The Watchung native was also named one of the Top Ten Midfielders from the high school class of 2013 by College Soccer News.

The Rutgers men’s soccer team has picked up several preseason mentions.  Fellow freshman Spencer Hambleton (Scotch Plains, N.J.) was named a Second Team All-American by Elite Soccer Report.  Sophomore midfielder Mael Corboz (Green Brook, N.J.) was named a Second Team Preseason All-American by College Sports Madness and joined senior forward Kene Eze (Sayreville, N.J.) on both the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Preseason All-Conference Team and College Sports Madness Preseason All-AAC First Team.

The regular season gets underway on Friday, Aug. 30 at the Duke Soccer Classic with RU opening against the host Blue Devils followed by a meeting with Elon on Sunday, Sept. 1.  The Scarlet Knights host Penn State for an early taste of Big Ten action in their home opener on Fri. Sept. 6.
