PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 15, 2012) – For the third time this season, Rutgers women’s soccer redshirt junior Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, ON, Canada) was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Redshirt senior Tricia DiPaolo (Sparta, N.J.) was selected to the honor roll.
“Individual honors are always nice, but my first goal has always been the success of the team,” said Filigno. “I always want to win – no matter who scores the goal – so I am very happy with our performance this weekend.”
Filigno becomes the first Scarlet Knight to win conference weekly honors three times in a single season. Against Louisville and Cincinnati, Filigno totaled four goals and added one assist to notch a nine-point weekend.
Filigno passed Carli Lloyd for the No. 1 spot all-time at Rutgers with her seventh game-winning goal against the Bearcats. The 2012 bronze medalist ranks fifth all-time at RU with 14 goals this season. She is one score away from a five-way tie for the record.
Filigno was also named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 20 and Aug. 27. For her efforts this weekend, Filigno was also named College Sports Madness National Offensive Player of the Week and the CollegeSoccer360.com Offensive Player of the Week.
DiPaolo, a converted back this season, helped RU to two shutouts in a 2-0-0 week. The Sparta, N.J., native tallied three points in a 5-0 Senior Day win over Cincinnati.
“It’s always nice to be honored, but I was glad we could get six points this weekend,” said DiPaolo. “We have been playing very well as a team and we want to keep it up heading into our match at Seton Hall.”
Goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins (Concord, N.C.) was named to the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week for posting two shutouts.
The Scarlet Knights head to BIG EAST rival Seton Hall to wrap up the regular season on Friday night. The match is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
