South Orange, N.J. (October 19, 2012) – Rutgers women’s soccer bested Seton Hall by a score of 2-0 Friday night at Owen T. Carroll Field. Freshman forward Rachel Cole (Teaneck, N.J.) posted her second game-winning goal of the season to secure a fifth seed in the BIG EAST Tournament.
Cole got the Scarlet Knights (12-6-1. 5-5-1) on the board in the 42nd minute. Off a set piece, the freshman put one away from 25 yards out, notching her third goal of the season.
Sophomore forward Stefanie Scholz (South Hackensack, N.J.) added the insurance goal in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Amy Pietrangelo (Laval, Quebec, Canada) started the play, dishing to forward Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, ON, Canada). Corralling a pass from the right, Scholz posted her second goal of the season, burying a shot far post.
Senior goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins (Concord, N.C.) made three saves in the effort. The netminder now has 5.4 shutouts this season.
For the game, the Scarlet Knights outshot the Pirates (7-12, 2-9) by a 12-11 mark.
Rutgers will wait for the outcome of St. John’s-Syracuse and Providence-Connecticut on Saturday night.
