SOMERSET, N.J. (August 17, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s soccer team defeated Richmond, 4-1, Saturday night at PDA Fields in Somerset, N.J. to close out its preseason slate. The Scarlet Knights struck early off the foot of freshman Madison Tiernan (Voorhees, N.J.) and never looked back, as four different players notched goals in the match.
“There was a great energy tonight and I think the commitment to defending I thought was exceptional with every player,” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “They set some goals the other night and one of them was to commit to the defensive side of the ball. We personally believe that defending wins championships.”
Following Tiernan’s goal, which was assisted by junior Amanda DeVolk (Frisco, Texas) – her first of two assists – junior Stef Scholz (South Hackensack, N.J.) made it 2-0 in the 43 rd minute off a solid through ball from freshman Ali Ryan (Bowie, Md.).
In the 64th minute, sophomore Rachel Cole (Teaneck, N.J.) attacked through the left side after a dish from Jenna Seddon (Galloway, N.J.), drawing a foul and earning a penalty kick attempt. Cole buried the shot in the back left of the net to give the Scarlet Knights a 3-0 lead.
Richmond got on the board in the 67th minute courtesy of a solid strike from 20 yards out by Krystal Koczot. But RU responded minutes later, as senior Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, Canada) and Devolk found sophomore Erica Skroski (Galloway, N.J.) off a corner kick to make it a 4-1 game.
Senior Jess Janosz (Ringwood, N.J.) recorded one save in the match in 55 minutes of action, as RU’s defensive unit limited the Spiders in shots. Sophomore Alana Jimenez (Ocean, N.J.) recorded two saves and allowed one goal in 35 minutes in net.
