PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 22, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s soccer team opens the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 23, when it welcomes Drexel to Yurcak Field for a 7 p.m. match. The Scarlet Knights went 13-8-1 last season en route to a BIG EAST Tournament berth and the program’s seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament.
RU returns eight starters and 13 letterwinners “To the Banks” for its 2013 campaign, including MAC Hermann Trophy Candidate Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, Canada) and fourth-year captain Tricia DiPaolo (Sparta, N.J.). American Athletic Conference Preseason Team selection Hayley Katkowski (Westford, Mass.) will serve as a captain in the midfield, while junior Cassie Inacio (Manalapan, N.J.) will captain the forward group.
Starting in net for the Scarlet Knights will be fifth-year senior Jess Janosz (Ringwood, N.J.), who has significant experience as a netminder for RU.
Rutgers holds a 4-0 all-time series advantage against Drexel, with its most recent victory coming by a 1-0 margin at home on Aug. 22, 2011. The Dragons have scored just one goal in four matches against RU, with the lone goal coming in the first-ever meeting between the two schools on Sept. 1, 1999. The Scarlet Knights won that game, 2-1, and have outscored Drexel, 7-1, in the all-time series.
Drexel returns a solid squad that went 13-3-3 last season as a member of the Colonial Athletic Conference. Likely to spark the Dragon offense is Sam Greenfield, who led the squad with five goals last season. Behind Greenfield, Drexel returns its second and third leading scorers from last year’s squad in Gabby Dixon (3g, 3a) and Melissa Chapman (4g, 0a). Eve Badana will likely get the nod in between the pipes. The junior started all 19 of the Dragons’ matches in 2013, while boasting a 0.67 goals against average (GAA).
RU will resume its opening weekend on Sunday, when the team travels to West Point, N.Y. to face Army at 1 p.m. Army, which went 8-10-0 last season, looks to get back on track under first-year head coach Marcia McDermott.
McDermott holds more than 25 years of coaching experience and has served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Women’s National Team. The Black Knights return their top scorer from last season to ease McDermott’s first season, as senior Joey Molacek will look to repeat her 2012 success (7 g, 3a). Junior goalkeeper Linda Rosas, who started 15 games last season for Army, will likely start in net for the Black Knights again this season.
Season tickets for RU women’s soccer are still on sale and are $50 for adults, $40 for children 12 & under and seniors 55 & older. All packages include a free t-shirt. Season tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 732-907-1570.
