WEST POINT, N.Y. (August 25, 2013) – A career day from junior Sara Corson (Metuchen, N.J.) carried the Rutgers women’s soccer team (2-0) to a 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon against Army (1-1). Corson, who scored the game’s first goal which was the first of her career, later scored again and tallied an assist for a five-point day.
The Black Knights responded in the final 15 minutes of regulation, scoring two goals to make the game close. Army’s Joey Molacek scored the squad’s second goal on a penalty kick attempt after sophomore Brianne Reed (Tinton Falls, N.J.) was whistled for a foul inside the box.
With 4:25 to play Molacek beat sophomore keeper Alana Jimenez (Ocean, N.J.) dead on to cut the RU lead to 3-2 and give the Black Knights hope, but the RU defense prevailed, holding Army off the board in the final minutes of play.
Army did not tally its first goal of the contest until the 75th minute, when Kimberly An beat sophomore Alana Jimenez (Ocean, N.J.) on a free kick from 20 yards out.
The Scarlet Knights largely dominated the second half, scoring two quick goals to build a 3-0 lead. The squad converted on its opportunities to pull away, as it recorded 19 shots – the most since notching 20 in a 5-0 victory against Cincinnati last season.
With the career day, Corson became the first RU player to score at least two goals in a match since redshirt senior Jonelle FIligno (Mississauga, Canada) tallied two in a victory against Dartmouth last season. Corson also is the first player to register at least five points in a match since Filigno tallied six against Fordham on Aug. 29, 2011.
Redshirt senior Jess Janosz (Ringwood, N.J.) has now gone 167 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal and improves to 2-0 this season and 8-3 for her career.
The Scarlet Knights continued their offensive onslaught in the 53rd minute, as freshman Madison Tiernan (Voorhees, N.J.) dribbled past the Army’s goalkeeper Jordan Castalia deep in the box before finding a wide open Corson on the left side for the tap-in in front of the goal line.
RU struck fast to start the second half, as Corosn got loose streaking down the left side just outside the box. Corson sent a ball into redshirt senior Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, Canada), who struck the ball from eight yards out and into the net for a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute.
The Scarlet Knights broke the scoreless tie in the 45th minute just before halftime, as Cole sent a ball into the box on a free kick following an Army foul. The ball was deflected off the Army keeper before Corson cleaned up and buried the shot in the back left of the goal, giving RU a 1-0 lead.
Both teams got a number of scoring changes in the first half, as Rutgers attempted eight shots to Army’s nine. RU registered four corner kicks in the period – five for the game – two shy of its total from its opening match against Drexel.
RU is back in action on Friday, Aug. 30, when it returns to Yurcak Field to take on Delaware at 7 p.m. Season tickets for RU women’s soccer are still on sale and are $50 for adults, $40 for children 12 & under and seniors 55 & older.
