PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 30, 2013) – Redshirt senior Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, Canada) scored the lone goal on a penalty kick in the 16th minute, the defense turned in another solid effort and the Rutgers women’s soccer team blanked visiting Delaware for a 1-0 victory on Friday night at Yurcak Field.
The Scarlet Knights improved to 3-0 for the ninth time in program history and the fifth time since 2006.
“Record-wise it’s a great start, it can’t get any better,” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “We still have a ways to go and tonight’s game was another indication that we have made some progress. But we’re trying to do some things where it’s mostly about awareness and the players recognizing the game early. The attitude of the team was great and I think they fought from start to finish.”
RU maintained possession for a good portion of the match, registering 11 shots and three corner kicks. Filigno got things going early for Rutgers in 16th minute by putting pressure on Delaware keeper Jessica Levy. The Canadian National Team member charged in the box and got tripped up by a defender while attempting a shot, setting her up for the PK opportunity. Levy guessed right and Filigno buried the strike in the back left of the net for her 13th career game-winner.
With the goal, she is now in second place all-time in game-winning strikes behind former RU greats Carli Lloyd (15) and Kris Kurzynowski (15).
Redshirt senior Jessica Janosz (Ringwood, N.J.) improved to 3-0 this season and 9-3 for her career “On the Banks.” She made one save and improved her scoreless streak to 257:25 to start the season, besting her mark of 201:29 to start 2012.
The RU defense continues to hold opponents in check defensively, as the Blue Hens (0-3) notched just one shot on goal. The Scarlet Knights have allowed just six shots on goal through three matches, while Janosz has had to make four saves in the first 270 minutes of the season.
The Scarlet Knights are back in action on Sunday, when RU welcomes Fordham to Yurcak Field for a 1 p.m. matchup. The match will be broadcast live on scarletknights.com by RVision, presented by AT&T. Danny Breslauer and Kyle Franko will be on the play-by-play call.
- Freshman defender Erin Smith (Medford Lakes, N.J.) made her first collegiate start against the Blue Hens. She logged 65 minutes of action.
- The Scarlet Knights improve to 3-0 for the fifth time since 2006 and ninth time in program history. RU began last season 4-0 before dropping a 4-1 decision to Texas A&M.
- Filigno is now in second place all-time in the RU record books with 13 game-winning goals.
- With the win, Crooks is now 10 wins away from 200 for his career.
