PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 18, 2013) – College Sports Madness named junior forward Stef Scholz (South Hackensack, N.J.) its American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday. Scholz scored five goals on the weekend – four in 38 minutes of play against Princeton – en route to earning American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors.
“I think Stef has put in the proper work, she’s been more consistent and I think some of the most impressive parts of the goals yesterday was the fact that she never really turned off in any capacity,” said head coach Glenn Crooks earlier in the week. “She seems to be very in tune with the game and I think we could see that coming. We’ve seen flashes of what Stef can do up top and I know she can score goals. I feel very happy for her and for her team.”
Scholz notched four goals in 38 minutes of action in the 5-1 victory over Princeton, recording a hat-trick in just 18 minutes of play to close the first half. She entered the weekend without a goal this season, but scored in the 4-0 victory over Fordham (Sept. 13) before her career day against the Tigers.
Scholz is the first Rutgers player to earn conference offensive player of the week honors since redshirt senior Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, Canada) did it on Oct. 15, 2012 in the BIG EAST. Overall, Filigno earned the honor three times last year.
Scholz also became the second Rutgers player to earn AAC Player of the Week honor this season, after Filigno took home the award on Sept. 3. Filigno scored the game-winning goals against Delaware (Aug. 30) and Fordham (Sept. 1).
The Scarlet Knights are back in action next Friday at Yurcak Field, where they will battle former BIG EAST rival Villanova. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m., as the match will be broadcast live on RVision, presented by AT&T. The match will precede an 8 p.m. Rutgers men’s soccer match against SMU as the team opens up its American Athletic Conference schedule.
