PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 19, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s soccer team looks to continue its hot start to the season Friday, when it welcomes former BIG EAST rival Villanova to Yurcak Field for a 5:30 p.m. matchup. The Scarlet Knights’ (6-1-1) lone home match of the weekend will be broadcast live on RVision, presented by AT&T, and precedes the Rutgers men’s soccer team’s 8 p.m. match against SMU.

RU swept both of its matches last weekend, outscoring Bryant (Sept. 13) and Princeton (Sept. 15) a combined 9-1. Junior forward Stef Scholz (South Hackensack, N.J.) put on a show against the Tigers, scoring four goals in 38 minutes of play – the most goals by a single player since Sept. 23, 1984.

Freshman Madison Tiernan (Voorhees, N.J.) was named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week after a five point weekend (2g, 1a), marking the second time this season she has been honored by the conference. Tiernan is now third on the team in assists and tied for second with four goals.

The Scarlet Knights defense was also impressive, allowing one goal in 180 minutes of work. Redshirt senior Jess Janosz (Ringwood, N.J.) made eight saves against Princeton to lower her goals against average (GAA) to 1.06 on the season. Sophomores Erica Skroski (Galloway, N.J.) and Brianne Reed (Tinton Falls, N.J.) continue to cement the RU backline, leading the team with 668 and 658 minutes, respectively.

Villanova (3-3-2) visits Piscataway looking to make it two wins in a row after defeating Saint Francis, 2-1, at home to close out last weekend. That win pulled the Wildcats to even in the win column, as the team is 0-2-2 in matches decided by one goal this season. Katie Martin leads the Wildcats with 14 points on the year (4g, 6a), while Reanna Marino and Caroline Brown are right behind her with three goals apiece. Jami Kranch has played every minute of 2013 in between the pipes for Villanova, making 28 saves and boasting a 1.30 goals against average (GAA).

The Scarlet Knights are 13-8-8 all-time against their former BIG EAST rivals and are 1-1 in the last two matchups. Villanova took last year’s meeting, 2-1, at Yurcak Field, while the Scarlet Knights beat ‘Nova by the same score on the road in 2011. RU rattled off five-straight wins against the Wildcats from 1989-1993.
