  • TAMPA, Fla. (Oct 20, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s soccer team played American Athletic Conference foe USF to a 2-2 tie Sunday afternoon at Corbett Stadium. Junior forward Stef Scholz (South Hackensack, N.J.) and freshman Madison Tiernan (Voorhess, N.J.) tallied the goals for RU, as the Bulls received a goal in the 82nd minute to tie the game and send it to overtime.

It marks the second time this season the Scarlet Knights (11-3-2, 4-2-1American) entered overtime, with both matches ending in a draw.

Redshirt senior Jess Janosz (Ringwood, N.J.) and sophomore Alana Jimenez (Ocean, N.J.) each logged minutes in between the pipes for the Scarlet Knights. Janosz made two saves and allowed no goals in the first half, while Jimenez made four saves and allowed two goals in 65 minutes of action.

Scholz got RU on the board first in the 18th minute, receiving a through ball over the top and beating Christiane Endler for her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Tiernan, who enjoyed her second three-point game of the season, notched the assist on the play.

USF responded with a goal in the 55th minute behind the foot of Demi Stokes, as the Bulls (8-4-4, 3-3-1 American) took advantage of their corner kick opportunity.

Nine minutes later sophomore Brianne Reed (Tinton Falls, N.J.) earned the first points of her career, throwing the ball into Tiernan who headed the ball into the back of the net. The goal gave RU a 2-1 lead with 26 minutes remaining in regulation.

But USF’s Sharla Passareillo cleaned up a rebound opportunity in the 82nd minute to send the game into OT. After the two 10 minute overtime period the game remained knotted at 2-2, giving RU its second tie of the season.

The Scarlet Knights return home on Thursday, Oct. 24 to face UConn in their second to last match of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., as the match will be broadcast live on RVision, presented by AT&T.

RU’s Sunday, Oct. 27 match vs. Temple is its final contest of the season and marks Senior Day. The team will honor its four seniors – Tricia DiPaolo (Sparta, N.J.), Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, Canada), Maria Gerew (Toms River, N.J.) and Janosz. – prior to the match.
