  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – A trio of goal scorers provided the offense as the Rutgers women’s soccer team (3-1-1) defeated Boston University (2-2) 3-0 in the first round of the Rutgers DoubleTree Classic Sept. 13 at Yurcak Field.

In a rematch of last year’s first-round NCAA Tournament contest, the Scarlet Knights took an early 1-0 lead when redshirt senior and team tri-captain Shannon Evans (Saddle Brook, NJ), a transfer from Long Island following the 1999 season, scored her first Rutgers goal in the 12th minute. Lissette Brandao (Rahway, NJ) headed Boo Schubert’s (Delran, NJ) corner kick to the far post, allowing Evans to punch the ball in on the goal line.

Sophomore all-American Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) made the score 2-0 with her fourth goal of the year in the 58th minute. Senior Erin McIntyre (Turnersville, NJ) sent a ball up the left side, which was picked up by Schubert and sent to junior Samantha Swerdloff (Montclair, NJ) in the middle of the box. Swerdloff found Lloyd at the far corner, and Lloyd maneuvered past a defender and let a shot go from 16 yards. With the goal, Lloyd moved into sole possession of eighth place on the Rutgers career goals chart (19) and ninth in career points (46).

Junior Adrienne Dugandzic (Sicklerville, NJ) scored the final RU goal in the 69th minute when McIntyre once again sent a long ball up the left side. Dugandzic ran onto it and carried up the middle, scoring from 15 yards.

Senior Christine Caldwell (Wyckoff, NJ) made four saves, earning her third shutout of the season (2-1-1).

“I was happy because we specifically designed our week to improve how we defended, and we took a step forward tonight,” third-year head coach Glenn Crooks said. “Our energy level tonight was the best it’s been all year.”

Rutgers was rated seventh by Soccerbuzz and 10th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in the Mid-Atlantic Region this week (Sept. 9). The Terriers were rated fifth by Soccerbuzz and sixth by the NSCAA in the Northeast Region.

The host Scarlet Knights will play Old Dominion Sunday, Sept. 15, at 12:00 p.m., followed by St. John’s and Boston University in the final round of the Rutgers DoubleTree Classic.
