PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Five Scarlet Knights received All-BIG EAST honors, the conference announced at its awards banquet Thursday. It marks the most postseason awards for RU in a single season, surpassing the previous mark of three, set in 2004 and 2006.
Junior Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.), a 2008 Preseason All-BIG EAST player, earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors after being named to the second team the past two years. Senior Alicia Hall (Port Republic, N.J.) also earned first team accolades for her second conference award; she was named to the second team in 2006.
Juniors Jenifer Anzivino (Middletown, N.J.), Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) and Caycie Gusman (Honolulu, Hawaii) picked up their first conference awards. Anzivino and Guthrie were each named to the second team while Gusman earned All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention.
“Our entire coaching staff is so proud of all five players honored,” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “They have each made a special contribution to our success this season.”
DeMaio is second in the BIG EAST and ninth nationally with 12 assists, the highest single-season total for a Scarlet Knight since Jennifer Gibbons recorded 13 in 1991. She now has 22 assists for her career, the fifth-highest total in RU history. Hall is second on the team with six goals, including four game-winners. The senior ranks tied for ninth in Rutgers history with 18 career goals. Her nine career game-winners puts her in a tie for fourth-place in school history.
Anzivino began the season as a forward, but moved to defense after the third game. She brought instant success, helping RU shut out nine opponents in the final 16 games. Rutgers’ defense posted a goals-against average of 0.618, the 17th-best mark in the country. Guthrie posted 67 saves while ranking 31st nationally with a 0.848 save percentage. Gusman recorded a team-high eight goals, including five game-winners, before an ACL injury during RU’s 1-0 win over Syracuse on Oct. 19 ended her season.
Rutgers (12-6-1) will find out its NCAA Tournament fate during the selection show, Monday, Nov. 10, at 8:00 p.m. on ESPNnews.
