NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (April 25, 2012) – Freshman pitcher Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) tossed the first perfect game for Rutgers softball since April 6, 2000 to help the Scarlet Knights defeat Iona 1-0 in game one of a nonconference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Rice Oval. Senior Noelle Sisco (Towaco, N.J.) added her first complete game of the season, completing the sweep with a 4-1 win in game two.
Andria Koehler was the last RU pitcher to toss a perfect game for the Scarlet Knights, coming in a 4-0 win against Monmouth during her freshman campaign. With the win Landrith also moves into a tie for second with Kelly Gallagher (1985) on Rutgers’ single season win list with 17 (17-9) on the year.
Sophomore left fielder Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) broke up the scoreless affair in game one with a deep fly ball over the left field fence, putting Rutgers out in front 1-0 in the top of the sixth inning. She finished game one 2-for-3 from the plate, while junior shortstop Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) registered two singles and a stolen base.
Starter Sarah Jackson (13-10) threw the complete game, allowing the lone run on five hits and striking out nine.
In game two, it was the Gaels (26-22) who struck first, as starting pitcher Alyssa Maiese helped herself out with a solo home run over the center field fence, putting Iona on top 1-0 after two complete innings.
Rutgers (24-24) tied it up in the top of the fifth, as senior catcher Kylee Bishop (Tacoma, Wash.) drew a one-out walk and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt from senior outfielder Lindsey Curran (Monroe Township, N.J.). An error on Iona’s third baseman allowed Williams to reach second and Bishop to score to even things up.
A leadoff double from junior second baseman Jennifer Harabedian (Flemington, N.J.) was followed by a passed ball to put a runner on third base with no outs. Harabedian was sent home on a ball hit to the infield by Bragg, to give RU its first lead of the contest at 2-1.
The Scarlet Knights added insurance for Sisco with two more runs in the top of the seventh. Freshman Ashley Alden (Ivyland, Pa.) tabbed her first hit of the afternoon and a sacrifice bunt from Bishop moved her into scoring position. Curran notched her second hit of the contest, a double into right field, allowing Alden to beat the relay throw and slide home safely. With Curran advancing on the throw to the plate, a single into right from senior third baseman Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) easily scored Curran from third for the 4-1 lead.
Sisco was able to hang on in the bottom of the seventh for her second victory of the season (2-0) and keep Rutgers a perfect 6-0 all-time against Iona. Sisco allowed one run on five hits and matched her season-high in strikeouts with five. Maiese falls to 12-10 on the year after allowing two earned runs on six hits.
The Scarlet Knights conclude their BIG EAST regular season schedule with a three-game series against St. John’s, starting on Saturday, April 28 at the RU Softball Complex. Saturday’s doubleheader is set for noon, while Sunday will mark Senior Day for RU’s four graduating seniors; Curran, Lindley, Sisco and Bishop.
