SAN ANTONIO, Texas (February 16, 2013) – Freshman Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) and sophomore Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif. ) allowed just three hits in seven innings of work, leading the Rutgers softball team (1-2) to a 3-0 win against Missouri State Saturday afternoon at the UTSA Classic.

Landrith struck out Missouri State’s final two batters to seal the victory after going 4.2 innings for RU. Maddox threw for 2.1 innings and allowed just one hit in her first career start as a Scarlet Knight.

Freshman Melanie Slowinski (Severn, Md.), sophomore Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) and senior Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) all recorded RBIs in the victory

The Scarlet Knights extended their lead to 3-0 after a two-hit fifth inning. Williams led off the inning with a single to left field, and advanced to second after a Missouri State error. Two batters later, following a Howard single, Bates reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Williams to cross the plate for another RU run.

Missouri State threatened in the third and fourth innings, twice getting runners in scoring position with one out. Landrith responded on both occasions, closing the door on back-to-back Missouri State batters to hold the Bears scoreless.

RU jumped ahead, 2-0, in the bottom of the second inning on a rally that began with a Missouri State error. After Alden reached on the error to start the inning, Harabedian laid down a sac-bunt to advance Alden to second.

A batter later, Slowinski slapped a single to left field, plating Alden and giving the Scarlet Knights their first lead of the day. Bragg stepped to the plate two batters later with the bases loaded and lined out to left field, earning an RBI to increase the RU lead to 2-0.

The Scarlet Knights face off against host school UTSA at 5:30 p.m., at Roadrunner Field.
