PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 17, 2013) – The Rutgers softball team (12-9) defeated both Boston College (7-12) and Florida A&M (6-24) on Sunday in Clearwater, Fla., finishing with a 15-6 victory over the Eagles, and an 8-0 shutout win over the Lady Rattlers.
In the first game, the Scarlet Knights blasted seven runs in the first two innings, following the outburst with five in the third. Junior outfielder Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) notched four runs, including two home runs in the first two innings. Sophomore Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) contributed three runs on the day, and went a perfect three-for-three at the plate.
BC’s Chelsea Dimon helped to put the Eagles on the board with a two-run single, and Tory Speer’s two-run homer cut the Scarlet Knights lead to 7-5 in the second inning. RU rallied with a five-run third inning to put the game out of reach.
RU pitcher Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) earned the win for RU, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings in relief.
In the second game, the Scarlet Knights dominated the Lady Rattlers as senior shortstop Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) and junior first baseman Alexis Durando (Oakland, N.J.) each scored in two runs apiece. Four Florida A&M errors in the fifth inning would hand RU four runs, which would prove to be the game.
Landrith allowed just two hits through five innings.
