PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 20, 2013) – The Rutgers softball team (13-9) extended a six-game win streak after downing Dartmouth in a neutral site matchup in Tampa, Fla., Wednesday. RU finished with a 6-5 victory over DC (8-6).
The Scarlet Knights attacked early with two runs in the first inning. With two outs in the top of the first, Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) singled to shortstop to put RU on base for the first time in the game. Alexis Durando (Oakland, N.J.) was next at bat and smashed a homer to left field, putting the first two runs on the board for Rutgers.
In the third inning Bates doubled to center field to send Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) home and advance Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) to third. To finish out scoring for RU in the third, Bates stole home and put RU up, 4-1 with the Big Green heading to the plate.
Dartmouth responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, as Alex St. Romain was walked and credited with an RBI and Kristen Rumley scored an unearned run.
Rutgers notched two more runs in the fifth with another two-run shot by Bates. Though Dartmouth would score twice more in the bottom of the fifth, it wouldn’t prove to be enough to top the Scarlet Knights.
RU pitcher Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) got the win for RU and extends her record to 4-0.
