PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 23, 2013) – The Rutgers softball team (14-10, 1-1 BIG EAST) ended a six-game win streak after dropping game one, 11-3, of a double header to USF in Tampa, Fla., Saturday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights were victorious in the second game, snapping the Bulls’ 17 game win streak. RU finished with a 3-2 win over its Big EAST foe.

USF (23-11, 1-1 BIG EAST) took an early lead as they combined for 11 runs in the first three innings. The USF squad was led by first baseman Stephanie Medina who blasted two of the team’s four home runs, notched five RBIs and went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs over the first three frames.

Rutgers initially got on the board in the first inning as Alexis Durando (Oakland, N.J.) doubled to right center, sending Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) home. After a three-inning rally from the Bulls, the Scarlet Knights scored again in the fourth, as senior Kaci Madden (Saratoga, N.Y.) singled down the leftfield line to push Ashley Alden (Ivyland, Pa.) home and tally her ninth RBI of the season. Bates scored again in the fifth with two outs, but the early USF rally was enough to take home the game-one win.

Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) (8-7) took the loss for the Scarlet Knights, allowing six earned runs on six innings of work.

USF pitcher Sara Nevins (10-4) finished the day striking out seven and allowing two earned runs in five innings of work.

In second game between the conference foes, a seventh inning surge would help the Scarlet Knights to victory. The Bulls capitalized on an RU error in the second inning to put up the first run of the game. With bases loaded, the Bulls second baseman Dani Wayt scored Lee Ann Spivey with a sac fly to left field to grab a 2-0 lead and finish out second inning scoring.

In the top of the fifth, RU right fielder Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) walked with two outs, and stole second a play later. Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) was next to bat and singled through the left side to send Williams home. Howard’s RBI was number 14 for the season, a team high she shares with Williams.

RU rallied in the seventh inning as Bates singled through the left side, advancing Williams to second. With two outs, Durando was next up and singled to right field to send Williams to third and Bates home, tying the game, 2-2. Durando stole second and forced a Bulls error allowing Bates to head home and give RU a 3-2 lead.

Freshman pitcher Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) (5-0) got the win for the Scarlet Knights, allowing two runs off two hits.

The Scarlet Knights will face the Bulls again tomorrow for the final game of their three-game series in Tampa. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
