Ashley Alden blasted a two-run home run to give RU a 4-0 lead in game one.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March. 27, 2013) – The Rutgers softball team (16-11) earned a pair of victories Wednesday afternoon at the RU Softball Complex, where the Scarlet Knights bested visiting Hartford (8-17), 5-0 and 7-0, respectively, in the team’s home-opening doubleheader.

Two stellar pitching performances ensured the RU victories, as sophomore Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) and freshman Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) each recorded complete-game shutouts.

Landrith (9-7) went 7.0 innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out eight in the scoreless outing. Not to be outdone, Maddox (5-1) allowed five hits and two walks in 7.0 innings of work, striking out five in the process.

RU cruised to a 7-0 victory in the second game of the doubleheader, as three RBIs by freshman Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) and a 2-4, two-run performance by senior Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) guided the Scarlet Knights to victory.

A two-RBI single by Whitley in the bottom of the first inning allowed RU to jump on top with a 2-0 lead. Williams and sophomore Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) would both come across in the fourth inning after the duo led off the inning with consecutive hits, extending RU’s lead to 4-0, before the squad tacked on three more to seal the win.

Overall, Whitley was 4-6 with one run and three RBIs on the afternoon, while Howard led RU from the plate in Game Two with a 2-3, three-run outing.

Senior Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) scored the Scarlet Knights’ first run of the afternoon in the second inning of Game One to give RU a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Ashley Alden (Ivyland, Pa.) all but sealed the RU victory in the bottom of the fifth inning, when the slugger blasted a two-run home run – her third of the season – to push RU’s lead to 4-0.

The Scarlet Knights would cross one more in the sixth to take the 5-0 victory. Whitley posted a career game in her team’s home-opener, going 3-3 with a run scored. It was the first three-hit game of her career.

RU is back in action on Friday afternoon, when the squad welcomes BIG EAST foe UConn to the RU Softball Complex for the first two games of a three-game conference set. The doubleheader, scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., represents the first home conference games for RU this season.

RVision, presented by AT&T, will broadcast both games live on scarletknights.com.
