PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March. 27, 2013) – The Rutgers softball team split its BIG EAST-opening doubleheader Friday afternoon against UConn, taking a 10-2 victory in the second game after UConn earned a 4-0 win to open the day at the RU Softball Complex.

Freshman righthander Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) continued her excellence this season for the Scarlet Knights, improving to 6-1 after her five-inning, four-hit outing. She allowed two runs and three walks, and struck out three in the victory.

The RU bats exploded in the fifth inning, as the Scarlet Knights amassed seven hits and took advantage of an error to post an eight-spot on the visiting Huskies. Senior Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.), who went 2-2 with a double in the fifth inning alone, led off with a single to spark the RU rally.

The contest ended with the right fielder trotting home following a game-winning double by sophomore Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.), which gave Rutgers a 10-2 lead and the victory after five innings due to the eight-run rule.

Williams led all RU hitters in the contest, going 3-4 with three runs, two RBIs, a double. She also led off the game with a solo shot – her fifth of the season – to left field, giving RU an early 1-0 lead.

Bates and freshman Jordan Whitely (Clayton, Del.) also notched three-hit efforts, as Bates went 3-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Whitley recorded her second three-hit effort in four games, going 3-3 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored.

UConn’s Kiki Saveriano, who started both games for the Huskies, held the RU bats at bay in Game One, guiding UConn to a complete-game, 4-0, shutout of the Scarlet Knights.

Despite allowing nine hits, Saveriano continually got out of jams, as RU left nine runners on base in the loss. The defeat dropped sophomore Alyssa Landrith’s (Vacaville, Calif.) record to 9-8 this season, after the lefty went 7.0 innings and allowed four runs off seven hits.  She continues to lead RU with a 2.07 ERA this season.

A trio of Scarlet Knights – seniors Jennifer Harabedian (Flemington, N.J.) and Kaci Madden (Saratoga, N.Y.) and junior Alexis Durando (Oakland, N.J.) – recorded two hits in the loss.

Both teams will be back in action tomorrow, March 30, at noon for the series finale at the RU Softball Complex.
