PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 10, 2013) – The Rutgers softball team split its midweek doubleheader with Villanova Wednesday afternoon at the Villanova Softball Complex, taking the first game, 8-2, before losing, 3-0, in the second contest.

With the split, RU (22-15, 6-5) continued its streak of either winning or splitting a season series with the Wildcats. The Scarlet Knights have not lost to Villanova in a season series since 2005.

Villanova’s (14-20, 2-9) Kate Pope led the Wildcats to their second BIG EAST win of the season in the second game of the doubleheader, going 7.0 innings and allowing only three hits to the Scarlet Knights. The three-hit output was the lowest for RU since a March 24 loss to South Florida.

Freshman pitcher Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) took the loss, going 4.0 innings and allowing three runs on six hits and one walk. It was the first time in 16 appearances this season Maddox (6-4) did not record a strikeout.

Senior pitcher Abbey Houston (New Egypt, N.J.) went 2.0 innings without allowing a run in relief of Maddox. She struck out one and allowed just one hit.

RU notched its 10th multi-hit effort of the season in game one of the doubleheader, recording 10 hits en route to an 8-2 victory. Four Scarlet Knights recorded multi-hit efforts in the win, as sophomore center fielder Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) led the way with a three-run homer in the top of the first inning.

Sophomore left fielder Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) and junior right fielder Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) each hit doubles in their two-hit efforts, while senior second baseman Jennifer Harabedian (Flemington, N.J.) went 2-4 with a pair of singles and stolen base.

Sophomore lefty Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) tossed her second consecutive complete game and 15th overall. She allowed nine hits and two earned runs in the shutout win.

The Scarlet Knights return to action tomorrow at 3:30 p.m., when they take on in-state rival Princeton at the RU Softball Complex. The Tigers are 30-22 all-time against Rutgers, but RU has won three straight and seven of eight against its Route One rivals.
