PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 11, 2013) – The pitching duo of freshman Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) and senior Abbey Houston (New Egypt, N.J.) led the Rutgers softball team to a 4-0 victory over in-state rival Princeton Thursday afternoon at the RU Softball Complex.
Houston started the game and went 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and three walks to guide the squad to victory. Maddox entered the game in the top of the fourth inning, finishing the final 3.2 innings and surrendering just two hits. Maddox, who is credited with the victory, improved to 7-4 this season.
The Scarlet Knights (23-15, 6-5) crossed three runs in the second inning of the contest, as junior Alexis Durando (Oakland, N.J.) sparked the rally with a leadoff single. A pair of RBI singles by sophomore Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) and junior Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) allowed two of RU’s runs to cross in the inning, with a walk by Kaci Madden (Saratoga, N.Y.) kicking off the scoring.
RU is back in action this Saturday, April 13, when it travels to South Bend, Ind., to square off with Notre Dame in a three game series. The Irish, at No. 4, are one seed ahead of the Scarlet Knights in the BIG EAST standings with a 7-1 conference record.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon before wrapping up the series with a noon matchup on Sunday, April 14.
