PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 24, 2013) – The Rutgers softball team was swept in its doubleheader against Syracuse on Wednesday at the RU Softball Complex, falling, 6-0, in the opener before suffering an 11-3 defeat to the Orange in five innings in Game Two.
The Orange (19-24, 7-9) held RU to eight hits in two contests after the Scarlet Knights (25-21, 6-10) recorded 11 hits in each of their two prior contests. From the plate, Cuse compiled 22 hits, including three home runs, to outscore RU 17-3 in the losses.
Sophomore Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) had her 14-game hitting streak snapped in the first game, and saw her 24-game reached base streak come to a close in the second.
All three RU pitchers saw action in the defeat, as senior Abbey Houston (New Egypt, N.J.) suffered her fifth loss of the season to drop to 2-5.
Veronica Grant gave Cuse its first runs of Game Two, cranking a two-run home run to right center to give the Orange a 2-0 lead.
By the time Ashley Dimon stepped to the plate in the top of the fifth inning, SU held a 10-3advantage after a six-run explosion in the fourth inning. RU crossed a run in the bottom half of the fourth hoping to avoid an early exit, but Dimon sent a solo shot to left center to build the SU lead back up to eight and secure the win in the fifth.
SU’s Stacey Kuwik allowed just two earned runs in 12.0 innings of work on the afternoon, going 2-0 on the day. She held RU to eight hits and improved to 13-9 this season.
Senior second baseman Jennifer Harabedian (Flemington, N.J.) led RU from the plate in both games, going 3-4 with a run scored.

The Orange jumped on RU early, crossing a run in the opening frame after a double by Morgan Nandin. After Cuse scored another run in third inning, a three-run homer by Shirley Daniels in the top of the fourth extended the Orange lead to 5-0.
Syracuse went on to score another run in the top of the fifth inning, which was Landrith’s final set of the game.
