  • QUEENS, N.Y. (April 28, 2013) – The Rutgers softball team fell, 5-1, Sunday afternoon against St. John’s in the series finale at Red Storm Field. SJU’s Tori Free tossed her second complete-game in as many days, holding RU (26-24, 7-12) to two hits in the loss.

Sophomore Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) took the loss in the outing. The lefty went 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, four runs, four earned runs and two walks. She recorded six strikeouts on the afternoon.

With losses to both Syracuse (20-26, 8-11) and Connecticut (24-24, 7-12) Sunday afternoon, RU maintains the No. 7 spot in the conference standings. The Scarlet Knights hold the tie breaker over the Huskies after taking two of three games from UConn earlier this season.

The Johnnies used solo shots in subsequent innings to build a 5-1 lead entering the final frame. Erin Burner hit a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning, after Chrissey Montez lifted a solo shot – her second of the game and 15th of the season – in the bottom of the fifth.

The Scarlet Knights notched their first run of the ball game in the top of the fifth inning, turning a bases loaded opportunity into a run after a tough chopper by sophomore Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.). The inning began with senior Jennifer Harabedian (Flemington, N.J.) reaching base on a fielding error, followed by a Kaci Madden (Saratoga, N.Y.) single two batters later.

After a walk by freshman Elizabeth Adams (Crystal Lake, Ill.), RU faced its second bases loaded opportunity in as many days. Free only allowed one run to come in for RU, as she struck out two of the next three batters to escape the inning still up, 3-1.

The contest began similarly to the pitching duel between Landirth and Free a day earlier, when each tossed complete games and struck out a combined 19 batters. But St. John’s got through to Landrith in the third, using a pair of singles followed by a three-run home run by Chrissey Montez – her 14th of the season – to take a 3-0 lead.

The Scarlet Knights hit the road on Tuesday for a nonconference matchup at LIU. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., at LIU Field.
